THIRTY FIVE POEMS TO DATE
(FEB. 16 - MARCH 21)
Crocuses

Crocuses shot up
dark purple and white bullets
shattering winter

3/16/09
Winter Beach

The black line of dots
scarves pulled tight round freezing necks
plodding on the beach

Unleashed dogs run free
scratching their toenails in sand
winter's first warm day

3/16/09
Recess

Dragonflies darting
zipping round the rescess yard with
fiery stained glass wings.

Mike's Bonzai
(4 Haiku)

Mike's bonzai trees grew
sculpted with time and copper
out of tiny pots

Twisted copper wire
curled round gnarled branches
a mini forest

Who knows where peace grows
perhaps in a bonzai forest
tended with great care

Can peace grow on shelves
crowded with gnarled bonzai
tended lovingly

To Evelyn

Yesterday was yours
pizza and candle lit cake
four hummingbird years

Kona 1

Kona time dissolves
forgotten regimes float lost
in morning's birdsong

Kona 2

Time dissolves
floats cloudlike
blowing lost regimes
thru rustling fronds
and early morning's
birdsong.

4 Haiku For Bud

magenta blosssoms
thrown lovingly to the sea
drifted toward Maui

caught in mornings breeze
dusty ashes blow across
shorline rich with life

ash white powder flows
sprinkling the hard black lava
a Mastefpiece gone

pearls of earth life flung
toward the pulsing azure sea
carried him beyond

Sunset over Alma Street

The giant orange
rising higher, stole twilight
magnificently

(3/4/09)
written for mom and dad
Sea Turtles

Gray-green turtles
tenaciously clawing sand
instinct primordal

Haiku

Haiku: difficult
to write while palm fronds
rustle above me

(3/2/09)
Yes, I did (3 haiku)

Yes, today I swam
in water over my head
back and forth, alone.

At Kona today
my feet did not touch sand
swimming back and forth

Kona today saw
yellow and blue fish darting
away, below me

Sweet Baby Theo

Your angelic smile
melts winter's bitter onslaught
sweet baby Theo

Advice

Avoid your personal epitomy of stupidity.

Blogging (Haiku)

Blogging connects us
tenuously only with
electricity

(2/24/09)
Two Haiku for
Oliver's Homecoming

Baby Oliver
tenderly wrapped in blankets
bids his friends farewell

Today for the first
time, baby Oliver felt
cold Wisconsin air

(2/23/09)
Old Palo Alto

Old Palo Alto
bulldozed to oblivion
lost to greed and glitz

Next Time, Theo

Next time you see them, Theo,
You will be as Alex,
deep voiced with biceps like baseballs.

Some will be long gone.
Great aunts and uncles
will walk slower
dark hair
replaced with wispy white.
They'll gasp at you, now six foot three,
scrutinizing your long legs and
reddish hair.

Remember when he sat on my lap?
How he went so happily to Robin?
How he was just beginning to walk?

And Alex,
too busy to chat,
will probably be chasing his own
one year old
round the table.

February 3, 2009

Flakes flew sideways all day long.
Double panes blocked winter's song.
When at last, the bell rang hard
Students filled the swirling yard.
