Corfu Trip

Fishing boats bobbing
Ionian coastal town
Amphilokhia

Busy port city
near Albanian border
Ingoumenitsa

Ferry to Corfu
cuts through the Ionian Sea
an hour well spent

Slender white candles
burn brightly, ends stuck in sand
Greek Orthodox Church

Slender white candles
throw flickering light onto
sacred icons

slender white candles
kissing glass covered icons
quiet reverence
(written by Ted and Laurie)

A little ouzo
Greek dancing in the hot sun
soon become best friends
(written by Ted and Laurie)

Missing by inches
tour buses almost scrape sides
Kononi Corfu

Husband writes haiku
forgotten by silly sife
on sunny Corfu

Wisteria droops
purple blossoms fill the sky
April on Corfu

42 Poems to Date

Formal Portrait

The formal portrait
of President Bailey hangs
alive on canvas

Spotted Buses

Spotted buses run
constant through narrow Greek streets
my carless world

Spotted buses run
humming outside our window
Athen's arteries

Spotted buses run
crammed with sombre Greeks dressed in
black, black and more black

Spotted buses pass
almost scraping metal sides
a narrow escape

Doves and Cycles

Mornings first light
fills with gentle doves cooing
through concrete and pines

Noisy cycles zoom
screeching through narrow Greek streets
long after sunset

Powerful cycles
looking for action, scream through
sleeping Grecian streets

Departure

Happy Theo, gone
flying home to Rhode Island
Grandma Lalee, sad

Twenty scrabble games
in fourteen days. Amazing.
kudos to Teddie

The marathon flight
long on hours and short on space
glad I'm not going

4/8/09
written the day my buddies left Greece
Two for Talos

Last year Talso jumped
over walls and through traffic
Now he lies on grass

Rambunctious Talos
mellowed by age and kindness
now sits like granite

4/8/09

Talos is a dog (who looks like a wolf)
who lives in our apartment

Street Market

Monday's street market
set up shop under black sky
a harsh alarm clock

The Beggar

Hobbling behind us
the beggar's cries echo thru
crowded spring sidewalks

4/5/09
Sudanese Vendors at the Acropolis

Red, green and yellow
parasols flew through the air
gripped by hungry men

The hunted vendors
fled, scattering like wild birds
far from Africa

3/28/09
written after seeing the Greek police
chase African street vendors selling
water, parasols and toys at the base of the
Acropolis
